With 54 percent of the vote, Whitney High volleyball player Shelby Young was the readers’ choice for last week’s Placer Sports Athlete of the Week. Young beat out Granite Bay football’s Matt Kine and Placer High’s Josh Klem for the honor.

The newest feature at our regional all-sports Web site continues this week with three new candidates chosen from the high schools throughout the Gold Country Media footprint – covering Placer County as well as the communities of Folsom and El Dorado Hills.

Voting will run from Monday through Sunday each week. Log on each week to check out the new nominees and cast your vote.

This week’s poll includes a trio of football players who are having outstanding seasons.

Vista del Lago running back Trey Hairabedian is the Eagle’s workhorse running back, as he's gained 1,207 yards on 210 carries for an Eagle team in the hunt for a playoff berth. The 5-10, 185-pound junior has scored 15 rushing touchdowns for Vista.

Jimmy Laughrea is the 6-2, 180-pound junior quarterback who has led 9-0 Rocklin to the Sierra Foothill League title. The second-year starter has completed 64 percent of his passes for 1,774 yards and has tossed 18 touchdowns against just three interceptions. His leadership is the main reason for the Thunder’s run through the brutal SFL.

Fred Mobley has caught more passes than any other player in the Sierra Foothill League this season. With 63 receptions for 730 yards, the 6-3, 172-pound senior has been a key piece of the new-look Oakmont spread offense.
