The Vista del Lago wrestling team improved to 3-1 in the Sierra Valley Conference on senior night with a 45-34 win over River City Wednesday. After a major decision at 128 pounds started momentum in River City’s direction, Vista rallied for five consecutive wins, including pins from Austin Button, Troy Grossi and Ben Johnson. Brandon Johnson also scored a first-round pin at 184. At 140, Eagle senior Matt Luzader and Austin Huynh traded near falls and reversals through nearly the entire match. After a timeout for the coaches to confirm the score was tied at 11, four seconds remained in the final period. Luzader then quickly bounced up from the kneeling position and escaped Huynh’s grasp as the buzzer sounded, giving him his seventh win of the season. Luzader, the first and only Eagle to be a four-year varsity member was admittedly overwhelmed by the emotions of an intense match on senior night. “I came to tears,” he said. “My coaches and teammates were yelling at me to not quit and fight to get that arm up. If I got away, I’d win. It was really nice to come out with that win.” Down 23 points, the Raiders began mounting a comeback by winning five of the next six matches, featuring pins from Bobby Perez (172), Julian Jones (197), Aaron Ringer (222) and Michael Sexton (108). Vista benefited from a Raider forfeit at 115 before freshman Mason Wright, wrestling in his first varsity match, recorded a third-round pin to ensure his team victory. “All in all, I think we did well. Most of the matches went the way I thought they would. It was nice to see our freshmen stepping up and saving us a dual,” said Vista coach Frank Richmond, who also gave some nice praise to his seniors Luzader and CJ Moore. “Those guys are the first two seniors that I felt really took charge of their team and did a great job with leadership. They’ve kind of grown the program up and I’d say that’s a pretty cool thing.”
