Vista del Lago won their first varsity wrestling tournament in their short history and to boot it was a tournament that they hosted. The Eagles won the Vista Invitational on Saturday, beating out 13 other schools with 158.5 points. Oakmont took second with 156.5 points. Austin Rompel, wrestling at 106 pounds, and Troy Grossi at 145, each won their weight classes to lead the team, while CJ Moore placed second at 170 pounds. Ben Johnson (145) and Clayton Wagner (220) both took third in their respective weight classes, while fourth-place finishers included Austin Burke (120), Daniel Rodriguez (126) and Austin Button (132). Michael Gary, wrestling at 138 pounds, placed fifth. “We won our first varsity trophy,” Vista coach Frank Richmond said. “Obviously, we’re really happy with how we did.” On Friday the Eagles wrestled crosstown rival Folsom and while they took it on the chin at the varsity level, the team wrestled much better at the junior varsity level. Moore (170) and Brandon Kim (Hwt.) picked up pins for the varsity team, while Burke earned a 13-0 major decision victory at 120 pounds. “I’m happy with how we wrestled,” Richmond said. “We had a couple matches under control and Folsom was able to pull them out with moves late in the match. We were still outclassed at the varsity level, but that’s the strongest Folsom team they’ve had in awhile. The junior varsity results show the direction that we’re going and I think we’ll be up with Folsom soon.”
