The game wasn’t a minute old before Vista imposed its will on the opponent. Right from the first whistle, the Vista del Lago varsity boys’ soccer team showed who the better team was at Union Mine on Wednesday night. Tim Fairley scored before 60 seconds came off the clock and the Eagles were on their way to a dominating 9-1 victory. While the Eagles dominated possession, they weren’t able to score for another 24 minutes. Fairley found Mark LePage on the wing and LePage crossed the ball to Jake Murphy, who blasted a hard shot with his left foot by the keeper. Six minutes later, Fairley kicked a through ball that Hunter Symon ran down just in front of the goal, made a quick stop and scored on a sharp-angle shot to make it 3-0 and the rout was on. Another 10 minutes went by before CJ Moore scored the most impressive goal of the night. He stole the ball from a Union Mine player deep in the offensive end, beat another guy and then booted the ball by the keeper. Ryan Curcio’s goal five minutes before the half put the Eagles up 5-0 at the break. The Eagles pulled back the offense in the second half but still scored four goals without exerting much effort. Fairley, again, got things started less than a minute in, scoring off a corner kick from Munraj Singh, who was brilliant all night. Shortly thereafter, Fairley took a pass from Alex Ford, made one quick move and scored his third goal of the night to make it 7-0. Ford got into the act next, faking the goalie out for an easy goal and Murphy finished the scoring with a ball that deflected off a Union Mine player and into the net. The Diamondbacks finally found the net late in the game to make the final 9-1. “It was a low-pressure game and the guys did a good job making one or two touches and then getting rid of the ball,” Vista coach Joe Esfandiary said. “That’s our style and we had a good time executing it tonight. We had some good goals and worked well together. We had a lot of fun tonight.”
