After losing six straight games, Vista del Lago’s varsity girls’ basketball team was happy to play Cosumnes Oaks again. The Eagles hadn’t won a game since beating the Wolfpack in overtime on Jan. 11 and were able to beat them again on Friday, this time in regulation time, 53-52. Elizabeth Freese scored a game-high 21 points and Hailey Coburn grabbed Freese’s missed shot and scored as time expired to improve the Eagles’ record to 2-6 in the Sierra Valley Conference and 4-18 overall. “It was nice to get that,” Vista coach Swan Wainwright said. “It was important. We had lost so many games in a row I started to lose track. After the game I told the girls way to mentally tough because if they weren’t we could have easily been on the other end. If Hailey wasn’t focused, she wouldn’t have gotten that rebound and could have easily missed the putback. It was a great way to finish off the game.” The game was close from start to finish, Vista leading by one after the first quarter, trailing by two at halftime and the game was tied after three quarters. Freese didn’t shoot well from the field, but did an outstanding job at the foul line, making 12-of-17. Caprina Pipion scored seven points and had 14 rebounds, five steals and three assists. Taryn Thomas scored six points on two three-pointers. “Liz has been our fearless leader,” Wainwright said. “She’s amped up her game and has been our most consistent offensive player. Caprina’s our rebounder. She’s athletic and has hops. What I’m trying to get her to do is cash in on those offensive rebounds and score. I want her to get paid for those rebounds with two points.” Vista has a decent chance for a two-game winning streak. On Tuesday they play host to Galt, a team they lost to earlier in the season by only three points. “I want that game badly,” Wainwright said. “Last time they made something like 12 threes on us. There’s no way they can shoot that well again.” On Friday the Eagles play host to Liberty Ranch in their final home game of the season.
