Vista girls look to rebound after loss to River CityBy: Matt Long, Sports Editor
While the 55-29 loss to River City Thursday hurt, Vista del Lago’s varsity girls’ basketball team is still in pretty good shape to finish the year on the roll, as the playoffs near.
Both of Vista’s league losses have come against River City, which means the Eagles beat everyone else the first time around the league schedule.
Vista played host to El Dorado Monday, who it beat 42-28 the first time the teams played Jan. 8. The team’s next game is Friday on the road at Cosumnes Oaks, who Vista defeated 37-29 Jan. 14. Beating a team previously doesn’t mean it will happen again, but it does give a team hope that if they did it once, they can do it again.
“The loss to River City isn’t devastating, it just means there’s one team in this league better than us,” Vista coach Marty Benjamin said. “There’s five other teams in league that we’ve already beaten and we’re going to have to play good basketball to beat them again. We’re still in control of our own destiny and can still finish 10-2 in league and 17-10 overall and make the playoffs.”
One thing is obvious after a second disappointing performance against River City.
“When we handle pressure (defense), we usually win and when we don’t handle it well, we don’t,” Benjamin said. “The teams we have left on the schedule don’t play defense anything like River City and that’s what sets River City apart from them and apart from us.”
