Vista girls claim SVC cross country titles

Vista del Lago's cross country team kicked off the postseason Wednesday by winning a pair of Sierra Valley Conference championships.

The varsity and freshman-sophomore girls' teams won their respective races, while the varsity and freshman-sophomore boys' teams finished second behind El Dorado at the league finals held at Willow Hills at Folsom High.

The varsity girls dominated the competition, as four of their runners placed in the top-five spots. Madeleine Ankhelyi was the first to cross the finish line, completing the race in 18 minutes, 5 seconds. Clare Carroll finished one minute later in second place with teammate Sierra Jaeger 26 seconds behind in third place. Alayna Gocke finished fifth in 20:13 with Jen Morgan running ninth in 20:59.

Weirui Xiao, Lucie Chevreuil, Hannah Montague and Sarah Downs were the top-four finishers for the freshman-sophomore girls, as they finished among the top-six runners in the race. Xiao placed second just four seconds behind the race winner in 14:02.  Chevreuil and Montague ran third and fourth in 14:42 and 14:56, respectively, while Downs finished sixth in 15:22.

Vista's fifth runner, Alex Vareljian, placed 15th in 17:00.

Zach Jaeger led the varsity boys, as he placed second in 16:28, 15 seconds behind the winner of the race. Teammate Kyle Chun finished right behind Jaeger in third place in 16:54. Jeff Reinking and Andrew Schiek ran closely together, finishing in 13th and 15th in 18:07 and 18:11, respectively. Aaron Schiek was the team's final scorer as he placed 23rd in 18:57.

Ryan Von Chance was Vista's first runner to cross the finish line in the freshman-sophomore boys' race, taking fifth in 12:36. Niko Guevara ran 11th in 13:12 with Vincent Chevreuil not far behind in 15th in 13:30. Cooper Rode and Daniel Baquero rounded out the scorers for the Eagles, placing 18th in 13:36 and 19th in 13:40, respectively.

Vista's next competition is the Sub-Section race at Frogtown in Angels Camp on Saturday.
