Led by race winner Madeleine Ankhelyi, Vista del Lago’s varsity girls’ cross country team won the Sierra Valley Conference championship on Wednesday. Ankhelyi posted her personal-best time of 19 minutes, 10 seconds in winning the race, while teammates Alegra Mendez (third), Jennifer Morgan (fourth), Jenn Arbaugh (sixth) and Liz Anderson (tenth) all finished in the top-10. “It helps that Oak Ridge isn’t in the league anymore, but we still won it,” Vista coach Mike Livingston said. “Madeleine ran her best time and it looks as if she’s rounding into form at the right time.” The Vista boys’ placed third, despite having the top-two finishers in Riley Martin (16:55) and Matt Winkler (16:57). Zach Yaeger also placed seventh to earn all-league status. All league runners at the freshman-sophomore level included Megan Howell (first), Paige Robinson (seventh) and Thalia Sullivan (ninth) for the girls and Sam Ruby (eighth) for the boys. The sub-section race is Saturday at Frogtown.
