Vista del Lago’s softball team could have made things easy on themselves today with an upset win over Sierra Valley Conference champion Union Mine, but instead the Eagles fell 11-1 in five innings.

The loss means the Eagles finished the regular season in a three-way tie for third place in the conference along with River City and Liberty Ranch. Wednesday one of those three teams will advance to the postseason when they meet for a round-robin playoff at Cosumnes Oaks High. Vista del Lago plays River City at 2 p.m. with the winner advancing to face Liberty Ranch immediately following the game. To make the postseason, the Eagles must win both games.  Liberty Ranch won the coin toss and only has to win one game to qualify for the postseason.

Not much went right for the Eagles after the top of the first inning Tuesday. Cherise Silvan walked to lead off the game, was sacrificed to second by Delaney Howard and moved to third on Ashley Muzzi’s ground out. Lindsey Fenton then ripped a 1-2 pitch inside the bag at third base for an RBI and the Eagles led 1-0.

Union Mine tied the score in the bottom of the inning and then added two runs in the second third and fourth innings, before finishing the game with four runs in the bottom of the fifth, the final runs coming on a three-run home run.

The Diamondbacks had 13 hits in five innings, many of which were scorched, as they showed why they are worthy of a Sierra Valley Conference title.

Vista managed six hits, two by Emily St. Dennis, but only managed the one run.
