BAKERSFIELD – The Folsom High wrestling team got a crash course in just how tough the last prep wrestling tournament of the year is on Friday night. In a span of 30 minutes two of the Bulldogs brightest stars ran into the top-ranked competitors in the state in their respective weight classes. Though seniors Connor Pollock (126) and Jordan Alleva (285) were up to the task eventually both fell in their quarterfinal matches on Friday night. Pollock held an early 5-0 lead on St. John Bosco freshman Anthony Valencia who had previously pinned him in the finals of the Doc Buchanan Invitation in Clovis earlier in the season. But the spry ninth grader fought back, taking the lead late in the second period and holding on for a 13-7 decision. “I failed to execute my offense,” Pollock said. “My conditioning wasn’t there.” Later in the quarterfinals Alleva fell 5-0 to the returning state heavyweight champion Nick Nevills of reigning team champion Clovis. Pollock, Alleva and Oak Ridge senior Keaton Subjeck, who lost a heartbreaker 11-10 in the final minute of his 160 pound quarterfinal to second-ranked Adrian Salas of Clovis, all must win their opening match in the fifth round of consolation this morning at 9 to assure themselves of a medal. Bulldog sophomore Nick Fiegener (145) is at the same point, rebounding from a championship third-round loss with two straight wins in the consolation bracket to reach the fifth round. Fiegener won his first match of the morning and went 3-1 for the day. Senior Isaias Diaz (152) rebounded from an opening round loss to win two consolation round matches but lost a tough 9-6 decision to sixth-ranked Kyle Perreault of Clovis East in the consolation third round to end his Bulldog career. “It’s one of the toughest things as a coach to watch the seniors wrestle their last match,” Bulldogs coach Mike Collier said. “When you get to this point, it’s an emotional roller-coaster.”
