Bicycles refurbished by Folsom Prison inmates were recently donated to local school children in El Dorado County.

On Thursday, Dec. 20, Folsom State Prison inmates and Warden Rick Hill donated 50 restored bicycles to 50 children to be delivered by the Cameron Park Rotary Club and Ponderosa High School students.

Children who received the bikes attend Sierra Elementary School in Placerville and Camino Elementary School in Camino.

According to Lt. Steve Zanini, the Folsom Prison bicycle donation is a Christmas season tradition which began in 1986.

Bicycles are donated throughout the year and are refurbished by inmates who work full time all year in the bicycle shop, an assignment that always has a long waiting list of interested inmates, Zanini said.
