Local students pen their way to scholarships

Local students were awarded hundreds of dollars in scholarships at the recent Voice of Democracy organized by the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Commander Bob Repar, of Folsom’s VFW Post 6604, and Carol Murphy, president of the VFW Ladies’ Auxiliary, presented awards recently to this year’s winners of the Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen competition. Zaina Naser, of Folsom High School, won $500. Michelle Tseng, of Folsom High, took second with $300 and Alicia Yeh, of Vista del Lago High School, placed third with $100. Cedric Peppers, of St. Mark’s School, won the Patriot’s Pen competition and was awarded $100 in scholarship funds. According to Corky Guenter, chairman of the contest, the Voice of Democracy program is open to high school students. The Patriot’s Pen program is for middle school students. The winners have a chance to go on and compete at the district, state and national levels. ~ Staff report
