Fresh off a tremendous championship victory, the Fighting Zebras varsity boys basketball team returned home to host the Lincoln High Roundup Tournament, Tuesday through Thursday; tournament includes varsity, junior varsity, and freshman competition. During last week’s Buck Bailey Tournament in Woodland, the Zebras fought their way past Napa, 91-86, Liberty Ranch, 49-47, and defeated Dixon in a nail-bitter, 70-68, for the crown. Lincoln’s Ethan Everett dropped in two free throws with almost no time on the clock to top the Rams. Challenging Lincoln in the Roundup will be Oakmont, Vista del Lago, and Golden Sierra High Schools. The Zebras’ varsity games begin 6 p.m., JV at 4:30, and frosh at noon. Games will take place in both campus gymnasiums. The host club is averaging almost 55 points a game, and pulling down more than 31 boards each outing. At 7-3 preseason, the boys in blue are distributing the scoring with all 14 on the roster contributing. Marcus Salgado leads the club averaging more than nine points a game. Right behind him is Kyle Lowe (8.0), Ethan Everett (7.9), Travis Miskell (5.9), Alexis Gonzales (5.7), and Steven Venturino (5.4). The Zebras are also strong in team rebounding. Junior forward James Pallas is tops gathering in 4.7 ricochets per contest. Golden Sierra’s Grizzlies come in at 3-7 in preseason play. The Garden Valley group features a balanced attack with seven players averaging within a couple points of each other. The team is averaging 42 points a game, but is strong on the glass pulling down a little less than 30 each contest. Senior guard Cisco Lesher leads the team scoring 6.5 points a game; junior forward Rocky Sacks tops the rebounds with 6.2 boards per contest. Vista del Lago’s Eagles are looking for their first win, and would love to pick up three at the Roundup. The Regal Birds average 64 points a game, and 32 rebounds, but can’t quite find that winning combination. Vista has three big guns, Drew McPherson (20 ppg), Tyler Jones (18 ppg), and Patrick Lowman (13 ppg). Jones, a 6-foot-6 senior is raking in 16 rebounds per contest, and the team 32, but the club’s record stands at 0-8. Oakmont’s Vikings are struggling at 4-6, but never underestimate the navy-and-white. The club hasn’t kept any player stats, but the team is averaging almost 58 points a game. And they’re fresh off a win over Inderkum, a pretty talented team. Plus, the Vikes topped the Zebras, 63-60, in the Del Oro tournament earlier this month. All Lincoln varsity games are scheduled for 6 p.m., the other matchup to follow at 7:30. The Zebras JV at 4:30 (earlier game at 3), and the blue-and-gold frosh play at noon, with a 1:30 game to follow.
