Things are going well for Vista del Lago’s wrestling team.

The Eagles enter this week with a 6-0 dual meet record in the Sierra Valley Conference and a win Wednesday against Liberty Ranch would make the team league champs, setting them up for a run at the Division IV section championship Saturday at Lincoln of Stockton High.

Just like in football when Vista faced perennial powerhouse Oakdale for the section championship, the Eagles have their sights set on the Mustangs again, as they look to be the team to beat in Division IV.

Individually, Ben Johnson led the way at the Lou Encalada Invitational Saturday at Rodriguez High in Fairfield. Johnson, a sophomore, won the 152-pound weight class with an 8-7 upset win over Adrian Maldonado of Will C. Wood in the championship match. It was a big win for Johnson, as Maldonado is ranked seventh at 152 pounds in the Sac-Joaquin Section.

Junior Evan Shelley and senior Jacob Sahagun earned third-place finishes at the tournament. Shelley, competing at 138 pounds, lost only one match, a close 8-7 decision, to an opponent from Roseville.

Sahagun returned to the lineup after an illness to take third in the 160-pound weight class.

At 132 pounds, freshman Ney Vencer placed fourth, which included a win over Folsom’s Jason Bergquist, who had beaten him earlier in the season.

Senior Clayton Wagner (220) and sophomore heavyweight Alex King came back to place seventh after losing their first matches.

With only a partial team competing at the tournament, Vista still managed a sixth-place finish out of 30 teams.
