Seventy percent of the nearly 1,000 Placer Sports readers who participated in the voting for last week’s Placer Sports Athlete of the Week selected Oakmont cross country’s Karlie Garcia for the honor.

The Oakmont freshman capped off the week of voting by delivering a record-setting performance at the prestigious Mt. Sac Invitational in Southern California Saturday. Garcia was the fastest freshman runner at both Mt. Sac and the equally impressive Stanford Invitational, and 667 of our reader voted for her in our poll.

The Viking was the top vote-getter pitted against Oak Ridge tennis player Tory Trylovich and Lincoln quarterback Alex Stewart.

The newest feature at our regional all-sports Web site continues this week with three new candidates chosen from the high schools throughout the Gold Country Media footprint – covering Placer County as well as the communities of Folsom and El Dorado Hills.

Voting will run from Monday through Sunday each week. Log on each week to check out the new nominees and cast your vote.

This week’s poll includes a diverse group of athletes from the vast reaches of our coverage area.

After missing the first portion of the season with a groin injury, Vista del Lago's Cody Dow has returned and made a strong team even stronger. Dow has scored six goals, as well as spending parts of some games playing fullback, in helping lead the Vista soccer team to the top of the Sierra Valley Conference standings.

Alex Obert, a strong scoring threat and four-year varsity starter, helped the Del Oro boys water polo team to a 7-1 regular season record. The 6-foot-5 senior scored 16 goals in the Eagles’ two first-round Sierra Foothill League tournament games last week. He will lead Del Oro into a rematch with league champion Granite Bay in the tournament this week.

Pat Rawlins, a senior running back at Colfax, ran for 279 yards in the Falcons impressive win over El Dorado last Friday night. The 5-foot-8, 160-pound runner has rushed for 1,125 yards and 13 touchdowns this season in helping Colfax post a 5-2 record out of the chute.
