Joel Slak will be one of the youngest golfers playing in the California State Amateur Golf Tournament beginning June 22 at Lake Merced Country Club. The 16-year-old Folsom High junior qualified for the tournament by placing in the top-nine at the sectional qualifier on April 28, shooting a 74 at El Macero Country Club on a cold day which had winds blowing at 30 miles per hour for most of the round. Slak’s score had him tied for fifth in the tournament, playing against a handful of other junior golfers and mostly adult males. “I played pretty well,” Slak said. “If I wouldn’t have bogeyed the last hole I would have had a 72. There were a lot of really good golfers that shot in the high 70s and low 80s.” The California State Amateur will feature about 150 of the top amateurs from all over the state, again most of which are adult males, not 16-year-old high school juniors. “It’s no big deal,” Slak said of playing against older, more experienced players. “My goal is to make the cut and that will be tough because you play two rounds and they take the top-32.”
