Madeleine Ankhelyi earned a medal for a tenth-place finish and Vista del Lago’s varsity girls placed 13th as a team at the state cross country championships held Saturday at Woodward Park in Fresno. Vista placed 13th in Division III race, just missing its goal of a top-10 finish, but still quite respectable for a young team featuring three freshmen and not a senior among the top-seven runners. “I think it’s hard for us to be anything but positive,” Vista coach Mike Livingston said. “We were aiming for a top-10 finish and 13th is pretty close. The girls’ performed very well in their first state meet.” Ankhelyi turned in a strong performance, moving from about 18th at the two-mile mark to tenth to earn the last top-10 medal. Ankhelyi finished the race in 18 minutes, 21 seconds, breaking her personal-best time this year by 16 seconds and achieving her goal for state in the process. She was also the first freshman to finish. “I thought a top-10 finish for Madeleine would be great and she closed the race out very well and got it,” Livingston said. “The other girls ran well too. Five of the seven girls ran personal-best times.” Jennifer Morgan finished second for the Eagles, placing 56th in 19:18. Marissa Mendez ran 63rd in 19:26, followed by Hannah Osuna (87th, 19:55), Jennifer Arbaugh (118th, 20:43), Maddie McFarland (142nd, 21:48) and Chelsea Gorman (146th, 22:12). Morgan (1:14), Osuna (:59), McFarland (1:00) and Gorman (1:58) all improved from their times at the Clovis Invitational held on the same course earlier this season. “We were the fifth team from Northern California and our combined team time of 1:39:55 was more than two minutes faster than our team time at the Clovis Invitational,” Livingston said. “Our average time of 19:33 represents a 26-second improvement over our average time at Clovis.” “It was a good day all around,” Livingston continued. “The girls learned a lot. It was a positive trip.”
