Curtis Booth is having quite a year. The 11-year-old Folsom resident followed up his gold medal at the California State Judo Championships in May by winning the United States Judo Federation Nationals held at San Francisco City College on July 11-12. Booth, competing in the Intermediate 2, 11-12-year-old age group, 31-kilogram weight class against nine other athletes, won all four of his matches to win the championship. In the final match, Booth faced the two-time defending champ, Wendall Ebisu of Hawaii, and beat him in overtime. “I thought it would be tough and I’m happy I made it through the bracket,” Booth said. “I thought that I was going to do well though.” Booth said him winning the competition was the result of a lot of hard work. “My goal was to make it on the podium and I trained hard for it,” Booth said. “I trained 15 hours a week and winning first place in the state helped built my confidence. I want to thank my coaches and trainers at Team Sacramento, the Folsom Karate Academy and with the Mad Dawg Wrestling Club.”
