CHP welcomes new public face for office in PlacervilleBy: Penne Usher, Telegraph Correspondent
PLACERVILLE, CA - There is a new official voice for the Placerville office of the California Highway Patrol.
Officer Quinn Cuthbertson, 41, has taken over the duties of the public information officer following former spokesman Officer Dan Stark’s return to the road.
Cuthbertson began his career with the CHP in 1999 in central Los Angeles, but his initial goal wasn’t to be in law enforcement.
The native Californian graduated from Northern Arizona University with a degree in Human Resource Management.
“There were no jobs available in my field,” Cuthbertson said. “So, I joined the Coast Guard.”
That was in 1995 and the stint with the Guard took him to Kodiak, Alaska, and Southern California.
In Alaska, he faced 52-foot seas while carrying out his duties and faced drug cartels in Southern California
Cuthbertson took part in a three-ton cocaine bust off the coast of Mexico.
After his time with the Coast Guard, Cuthbertson said he needed to make a decision what to do next. He considered the DEA, but ultimately when presented with information about the CHP – his decision was made.
In the years since, he has moved around with various departments, ultimately hoping to land in the Placerville office.
“It took me 10 years to get up here. It was an obvious choice,” he said.
When asked why he chose a career in law enforcement, Cuthbertson said it’s all about the people.
“I love helping people out and being there when they need me,” he said. “It could be a car crash, someone broken down or even a drunk driver that needs help.”
He said he looks at a drunk driver as someone who needs help.
“Hopefully being arrested will be the catalyst that sends them onto a better path and to make better choices,” he said.
As the new information officer for the Placerville office, Cuthbertson is looking forward to getting involved in the community.
“I was to be as involved as I can with public education, volunteer programs and media relations,” he said.
Married for 12 years to Teresa, the couple has two boys, 8 and 11.
