Folsom High senior Phillip Carter had planned to attend San Jose State and play football for the Spartans next year.

In December when San Jose State football coach Mike MacIntyre took a job with the University of Colorado, Carter also changed his plans. Having chosen San Jose State over Harvard, Yale, Northern Arizona and Air Force, Carter now was looking for another school.

Folsom assistant football coach Josh Wetzel sent film on Carter to the Blue Devils and that started the recruiting process.

“A couple weeks after that they came to my home and offered me a scholarship,” Carter said.

Carter visited Duke for the first time two weekends ago and liked what he saw.

“It was great,” Carter said. “I met the coaches and players and the campus and facilities were amazing. The football facilities are fairly new. They have an outdoor and indoor facility and are in the process of expanding the football stadium.”

Though Carter contributed to the Bulldogs on offense and defense, the Blue Devils recruited Carter as a safety and he’s excited to play defense.

While at Duke, Carter plans to study Civil Engineering.

“It‘s a great opportunity for Phillip,” Folsom coach Kris Richardson said. “It’s an ACC program and one of the best academic institutions. I’m excited for him. It’s a great fit academically and athletically.”
