Jordan Bailey led the way for Vista del Lago’s wrestling team at the McNair Invitational in Stockton on Saturday. Bailey won all four of his matches in the 152-pound weight class to place first in the division. Troy Grossi placed fourth at 130 pounds with a 2-2 record, while Austin Rompel ended up fifth at 103 pounds by splitting his two matches. C.J. Moore placed sixth at 160 pounds with a 2-2 record. Daniel Rodriguez only wrestled one match at 125 pounds and won it, while Jacob Sahagun also won one match by pin at 145. Matt Luzader (145) and David Rossi (171) both lost two matches. “We had a great performance by placing seventh,” Vista coach Frank Richmond said. “We were missing three seniors to injury and illness in Chris Chovanec, Jaleon Reid and Trevor Grossi. I believe we had a shot at the title if those seniors were in the lineup.” The Eagles’ junior varsity team also had a great weekend, winning the Kennedy JV Dual Tournament with a thrilling 36-30 win over Folsom in the semifinals and then avenging last year’s loss to Franklin in the finals, 42-33. Vista won all five matches on the day, beating Folsom High for the first time ever. The match came down to the final bout, where Vista’s Lucas Galgiani upset his opponent from Folsom High with a pin in the 160-pound weight class to give the Eagles the win. The Eagles took home 16 medals from the tournament. Austin Burke (112, three pins), Evan Shelley (119, two pins), Austin Button (130, four pins), Alex Hamilton (145, three pins), Jeremy Mull (145, four pins) and Brandon Kim (Hwt., four pins) won all five of their matches and earned gold medals. Winning four matches and earning silver medals were Mitch Jones (119, two pins), Michael Gary (135, two pins), Devin Ziemathis (no pins) and Clayton Wagner (171, three pins). Bronze medal winners with three wins included James Lopez (103, one pin), Ash Mahein (119, two pins), Robert Stapp (125, two pins), Ezra McCann (140, three pins), Gavino Barrios (152, two pins) and Ryan Johnson (215, one pin). The varsity squad will compete at the Ponderosa Duals on Friday, while the junior varsity team will be participating in the tournament on Saturday.
