The veteran runners for Oak Ridge High returned to form in the first Sierra Foothill League meet held Wednesday at the Willow Hills course in Folsom, while the younger, less experienced Trojans found out what the league is all about.
Elena and Maddy Denner placed first and second, respectively, in the varsity girls’ race, while Drew Spencer led the varsity boys by placing 16th. Oak Ridge’s freshman-sophomore girls finished second to Granite Bay, while the boys placed sixth.
The Denner sisters’ only competition was each other, as Elena won the 3.08-mile race in 18 minutes, 39.2 seconds, 26 seconds in front of Maddy (19:05.9). The third-place finisher, Cathilyn McIntosh from Del Oro, finished 35 seconds behind Maddy.
Oak Ridge teammate Haley Dean placed 17th in 21:23.5. The team’s final two scoring runners, Madeline Vanhonsebrouck (24:07) and Maddie Wright (25:13.3) placed 39th and 49th, respectively. Oak Ridge placed fourth overall behind Woodcreek, Del Oro and Rocklin.
Spencer posted a time of 17:19.8 to lead the varsity boys’ team. Fellow senior Christian Wilde placed 27th in 18:14.4, while Sohan Kancherla placed 37th in 18:35.1. Colin Kong (61st, 20:17.1) and Parker Loggins (80th, 20:54.4) rounded out the scoring runners. The Trojans placed seventh overall.
Freshman Abby Fletcher led the freshman-sophomore girls’ team, as she placed third in the 2.2-mile race with a time of 14:13.1. Abby Gladwell (fifth, 14:22.9), Skylar Hayward (sixth, 14:34.3) and Alexia Enriques (eighth, 14:35.4) all finished in the top-eight spots for the Trojans. Hannah Connover was the team’s fifth runner, as she placed 20th in 15:24.1.
For the boys, Clark Fransham and Aidan Campbell led the way, as Fransham took 16th in 12:39.9, while Campbell finished a second behind in 18th place. Also scoring were James Gezi (35th, 13:16.6), Grant Geeting (37th, 13:17.5) and Tyler Markovsky (44th, 13:29.8).
