Another very important election

Just a couple of weeks ago, The Folsom Telegraph co-sponsored a special Folsom City Council candidates forum, along with other reputable local media organizations right here in our city. With 12 candidates vying for three open seats, the Folsom City Council race is a much talked about race. However, there are many important races this year that affect our community.

One election that is very important will be that of the Governing Board of the Folsom Cordova Unified School District (FCUSD). In this contest, three seats are open with four candidates vying for those positions, one of which being an incumbent. While all of the local political races are of great importance, this is one that too is quite significant and this newspaper is proud to be one of the local trusted media organizations co-sponsoring the upcoming 2018 Candidates Forum presented by the Folsom Cordova Education Foundation.

Taking place on the evening of Monday, Sept. 24, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at the FCUSD District office, located at 1965 Birkmont Drive in Rancho Cordova, we hope to see as many local faces in attendance as we did at the recent City Council forum.

This event will be live streamed on social media with the help of Folsom TV, who will also be moderating the event. The forum will provide the opportunity for the public to meet these candidates and hear their perspectives on a wide range of issues that affect our local school district. While this isn’t a debate between candidates, it is a platform for the participating candidates to share their opinions and views on key issues while providing the public with the knowledge in which they can make their decision from come Nov. 6.

While our local races for congressional seats, council seats, measures and more are of great importance, the future of education in our community is by far of equal, if not greater importance. These are the individuals who will govern our local educators, local programs and ultimately have a role in those who can become our future leaders, our children.

Folsom is known for greatness when it comes to our local schools. Much of this due to the fact that the Folsom Cordova Unified School District employs so many great individuals that are passionate for what they do. While we tend to get caught up in discussion items like growth, traffic congestion, infrastructure, how we pick our mayor and other common topics in our community’s circle of politics, oftentimes it is these key elections that go without a great deal of public knowledge outside that of area signs, mailers and other campaign propaganda from the candidates themselves. We’re changing that this year.

As your community newspaper, we are honored to be part of this upcoming forum. While it is not our policy to endorse candidates and measures at stake, it is our job to inform you of the who, what, where, why and when in an effort to assist you in making your own decision.

In the next two weeks, look to our pages for well-balanced pre-coverage on the who’s who of this upcoming election. On Sept. 24, bring that knowledge to this special forum and meet these candidates who have an interest in our children’s future. We look forward to being a part of this and thank the FCUSD for inviting us to play a role in this important event.
