2018 is going by in the blink of an eye. Here at Gold Country Media and the Folsom Telegraph, we are continuing to make the necessary changes to keep your community newspaper alive and well for many years to come. We thought we would take a moment to reflect on where we’ve been, where we are, and most important, where we are going.
Two years ago, the Folsom Telegraph made drastic changes in the fashion in which this newspaper covers its community. Through the decades, this newspaper has always been one that is loved by the community, but there were times in which different management and staff allowed it to drift from providing unique, weekly coverage for the Folsom and El Dorado Hills communities that differed from other resources.
The change in focus, engagement in the community and the added attention to detail has been very successful. In 2017, the Telegraph returned to award-winning status with the California Newspaper Publishers Association with a single honor that marked the first award in more than a decade. This year, the Telegraph earned an impressive six honors in the CNPA. Among the honors was being named a top five newspaper in California, for its well-balanced community news and advertising, dynamic reporting and strong visual appearance week after week.
While we have made great strides in the way in which we bring you the news of your community, today, one major economic impact we’ve incurred is the rising cost of newsprint. The threat of tariffs has caused a significant increase in the price of the paper we print on. In recent months, we’ve had to be very strategic with our page planning. While not the strategy for the long term, we have had to eliminate or reduce some features of the Folsom Telegraph. Sudoku and crosswords were one area that we’re impacted by these measures, forcing us to limit their size and frequency.
We are working diligently on a solution to bring our many puzzles back better than ever. For those of you who have called, and those we have spoken with, thank you for the feedback.
Looking ahead, the Folsom Telegraph is in a strong position to be your community newspaper for many years to come. In the coming months Gold Country Media will be adding additional special sections and launching targeted products to the entire marketplace. Our staff is amazing, working harder than ever. We strive to make every issue of this newspaper as complete, balanced and relevant as possible.
Our doors are open, and we welcome your comments and suggestions, good or bad. We thank all of you for your continued loyalty and encourage you to please continue to support your community newspaper. It is local advertising, readership and subscriptions that all play a part in our continued success.
