Eight Woodcreek Little League runners reached base, seven of them scoring in a thrilling third inning that pushed the 9-10 all-stars to a 10-3 victory over Fair Oaks/Orangeville in the Section 4 championships Wednesday in Lincoln.
Now, they wait.
Woodcreek’s youngest all-stars will enter the Division 2 state tournament July 26 against the Section 3 winner in a double-elimination showdown between California’s top teams in Toulumne City.
Woodcreek overcame El Dorado Hills with consecutive wins in two days to win the District 54 title, and then rolled through the Section 4 bracket with three straight wins to extend the season.
“It was a total team effort,” Woodcreek coach Erik Hanson said. “Everything we have done so far was the same reason we won this one.
“We won with hitting, another great job of pitching and our defense has been our anchor.”
Braden Sloan started on the mound for Woodcreek and left the game with a 10-0 lead. Gerald Hanson pitched well to close the game against hungry FOV hitters. They combined to allow nine hits, walk four and strike out six (four looking).
Zack Malone led the charge at the plate by hitting 2 for 3 with two runs and a double from the leadoff position. Jacob Harvey was 2 for 3 with a double and two runs while Isaac Hawthrone (1 for 2, run) and Hanson (three-RBI triple) also made big contributions.
