After missing out on the state cross country meet a year ago, Oak Ridge High’s varsity girls’ cross country team will try to qualify again this year.

The Sac-Joaquin Section cross country finals will be held Friday at the Willow Hills course in Folsom. The Trojans will be looking to improve on their fourth-place finish a year ago when they finished behind Davis, Woodcreek and McClatchy.

The girls ran fourth at the Sub-section race held last weekend. Elena Denner led the way, as she placed fifth in 18 minutes, 35 seconds. Abby Fletcher finished right behind her in seventh place in 18:36. Haley Dean ran 14th in 19:14 and was followed by Abby Gladwell (51st, 20:42), Alexia Enriques (59th, 20:54) and Ayden Subjeck (86th, 22:23).

The varsity boys placed 13th at Sub-sections and did not qualify for sections as a team, but Drew Spencer and Sohan Kancherla did advance. Spencer placed 18th in 16:06, while Kancherla ran 41st in 16:26. Other scoring runners for the Trojans included Christian Wilde (71st, 17:06), Colin Kong (107th, 18:11) and Parker Loggins (123rd, 18:35).

Oak Ridge’s freshman boys’ team placed third at Sub-sections, led by Clark Fransham, who ran sixth in 12:03. James Gezi placed 17th in 12:27 and was followed by Evan Kwong (23rd, 12:44), Tyler Markovsky (26th, 12:51) and Grant Geeting (27th, 12:52).

The sophomore boys placed 13th as a team. Aidan Campbell led the way, posting a time of 12:03 to place 21st. Dylan Goebel ran 50th in 12:34, while Nolen Berringer took 71st in 12:48. Cameron Hughes (86th, 13:02) and Diego Simo (95th, 13:07) also scored for the team.
