A 5-car collision on eastbound Highway 50 injured five occupants at 4:05 p.m. Monday, Aug. 27, just west of Folsom Boulevard, causing traffic to back up during rush hour.

Five victims were transported to area hospitals with at least moderate injuries, including a 4-year-old girl, said Public Information Officer Tommy Riggin, of California Highway Patrol East Sacramento Area. Riggin said the hospital treating the 4-year-old said last night she is expected to live.

The collision occurred less than a half-mile from Folsom Boulevard when a Placerville driver in a 2016 Toyota Prius was heading eastbound on Highway 50. Riggin said the driver did not stop in time and rear-ended a Fremont family of four in a 2001 Honda Prelude in stopped traffic, resulting in the Prelude being shoved into the vehicle in front of them, a Folsom driver in a 2011 Honda Odyssey.

Riggin said after, the Prelude shot out into the left lane where it was struck on the driver’s side by a Rancho Cordova driver in a 2001 Honda Civic. Riggin said the fifth vehicle involved was a 2011 Toyota Highlander with minor damage to the left rear side. He said investigators are still working to figure out where this vehicle was in the collision.

The four occupants in the Prelude included a mother, father, son and daughter. Riggin said the 4-year-old daughter was in a car seat behind the driver, receiving the most trauma during the collision.

The driver in the Prius was transported to a separate hospital. The current conditions of all the occupants are unknown at this time.

Riggin said the collision caused Highway 50 to close down to one lane, causing major traffic issues. He said the roadway was reopened at 5:15 p.m.

“It does not appear that any alcohol was involved in the collision,” Riggin said. “It was just someone who didn’t stop in time for the traffic ahead.”

Sacramento Metro Fire responded to the collision as well as Medic 35 from the Folsom Fire Department.

No further information has been released at this time.
