Folsom girls and serious female basketball players in the Sacramento area have a great opportunity coming their way.

Try-outs for the Cal Stars Basketball Club will be held Aug. 11 and Aug. 18. The Lady Bulldogs Basketball Club and the Folsom Fusion Basketball Club recently partnered and reached an agreement with the Cal Stars to jointly bring elite girls’ basketball to the Sacramento area.

“Cal Stars is one of the top three or four clubs in the U.S.,” Folsom High varsity girls’ basketball coach Lynn Wolking said. “This program is good for the kids because they get to play with and against other great players, they get to travel, and they get some exposure to scouts.”

The Cal Stars Basketball Club is one of only thirty-two nationally sponsored Nike Girls' Elite Youth Basketball Programs in the nation. They are headquartered in Orinda and have regional offices in Seattle, Portland, So Cal, and Anchorage.  They are now coming to Folsom.

The Cal Stars-Sacramento Elite basketball program will field teams comprising of highly talented girls from both the local and greater Sacramento areas in fifth through 12th grades. Tryouts for the fall session, which lasts from Aug. 11 through Dec. 21, will be held from 5-7 p.m. at the Folsom Sports Complex on Aug. 11. The tryouts costs $20 and are for girls in grades five through eight.

Another tryout date will be Aug. 18 at Folsom High School. Fifth and sixth grade girls will try out from 10 a.m. to noon, while seventh and eighth-grade girls will try out from 1 to 3 p.m.

The youth program will provide athletes professional training and development programs designed to build future players for the Nike EYBL and highly coveted travel teams.

The Cal Stars top teams have recently been represented by some local talent, namely McDonald’s All-American and Folsom HS standout McKenzie Forbes (Cal-Berkeley), and Oak Ridge All-Star Marie Olson (SMU).

The inaugural season for high-school aged travel teams will begin next March. It is an elite-level, national travelling basketball program and competes in national college viewing events. Being part of the Nike family allows the Cal Stars to compete against the best teams and players in the country at the nicest venues available. The club is highly respected by college coaches, recruiting services, and media outlets across the country.
