The month of June when all the high school teams play their summer tournaments provides coaches time for two things: 1) evaluate players and 2) coach, watch and get a good feel for what next year’s team might look like.

Vista del Lago’s varsity girls’ basketball coach Marty Benjamin just wrapped up summer ball with his team. The team played 10 games in two tournaments and won six of them, and also practiced twice a week for five or six weeks. It was a successful summer all the way around.

“It was a good summer and a lot of fun,” Benjamin said. “The one negative was that Sac State cancelled their camp at the last minute and that cost us four games. “We played in our Summer Splash Tournament went 1-3 there and then we went to the St. Mary’s camp and played well there, winning five-out-of-six games. The girls had a blast.”

Not only did the Vista varsity girls have a good summer, but the entire program did. The junior varsity team won seven-of-nine games, while the freshman team also won three of four games at the Summer Splash tournament at Vista.

“The St. Mary’s camp was good because the varsity and junior varsity teams both played six games and we got a lot of evaluation done in that time and got to see both teams. We had 23 players there total and it was good to see them all play against good competition.”

Every coach wants to see improvement from his returning players, and Benjamin saw that.

“Our returning varsity starters also played a lot of AAU ball over the summer on top of what we were doing and played a lot of competitive ball,” Benjamin said. “I’ve seen huge improvement from the girls. All of our girls have improved, so I think we should be better this year than we were last year. We’ve also got some new girls that are going to make a difference at the varsity level.”
