A man who robbed a North Auburn bank by claiming to have a bomb was still at large today.

The robbery Saturday was the second in the Auburn area in two days.

The man, who wore dark glasses and a black knit cap to disguise his face, walked into the North Auburn Wells Fargo Bank at about 1 p.m., the Placer County Sheriff’s Office reported. He passed a note to a teller saying he had a bomb.

A Placer County Sheriff’s Office release today said the teller handed over cash before the robber fled the bank, riding off on a bicycle.

Detective Jim Hudson said that descriptions and photos taken at both the Saturday robbery and one that took place late Friday morning indicate that the two incidents were unrelated.

“It was definitely a different guy,” Hudson said.

Saturday’s robbery suspect is described as in his late 30s or early 40s, with a salt-and-pepper goatee he may have shaved off or dyed after the hold-up.

He was wearing a purple, long-sleeved shirt, and jeans at the time of the robbery. Hudson said onlookers saw him get on a bike and ride north on Highway 49 before disappearing. But witnesses weren’t able to give a description of the bike, he said.

Standard procedure is not to divulge the amount of money stolen in bank robberies, Hudson said.

The teller who was robbed said the perpetrator was about 6 feet tall and 170 pounds, Hudson said. Customers in the bank were unaware there had been a robbery until after the man had left, he added.

Detectives with the Sheriff’s Office are seeking the public’s help in identifying Saturday’s robbery suspect. The bank is located near the Grass Valley Highway-Bell Road intersection.

Auburn Police are asking for help in the investigation into Friday’s robbery of the High Street Bank of America branch. The white-haired robber, who appeared to be in his 70s, told the teller he had a gun and was last seen leaving the bank area on foot, Auburn Police said.

“Bank robberies are definitely increasing,” Hudson said. “We’re having several when we’ve gone a whole year without one in some years.”
