El Dorado legion baseball team eliminated from state tournament
The El Dorado Legion Post 119 under-19 baseball team picked up a win at the legion baseball state tournament in Yountville, but was then eliminated after two straight losses. El Dorado opened the tournament with a 16-4 win over Merced on Saturday. Jeff McKenzie, a 2009 Oak Ridge graduate and the staff’s pitching ace, allowed three runs, scattered eight hits and struck out five in eight innings of work. He also did the job at the plate with three hits, including a double and drove in three runs. Brandon Flynton, a 2010 graduate of Vista del Lago, also had three hits including a home run and three RBIs. El Dorado could have used some of those runs the rest of the tournament, as the team was outscored 14-4 in its next two games. On Sunday El Dorado lost to Playa del Rey, 5-2. Another 2010 Vista graduate, Landis Provencial, scattered 11 hits and struck out four in 7 1/3 innings on the mound. Provencial kept El Dorado in the game, as the team trailed 3-2 before Playa del Rey scored two insurance runs in the eighth inning. Vista’s Jeff Miller and Oak Ridge’s Tommy Massa had hits in the loss. El Dorado bowed out of the tournament following Monday’s 9-2 loss to San Bernardino. Flynton pitched 7 1/3 innings and Vista teammate Dan Muzzi finished the game on the mound. Miller, Shane Murphy and Massa all had hits in the game. “It was a great season,” El Dorado coach Rusty McDonald said. “We won a game at the state tournament and ended up fourth and that’s a great accomplishment. This is my tenth year of coaching American Legion and in terms of team chemistry, this team is as good as any as I’ve ever coached.”
