Vista scores 76-61 win at Ponderosa
Vista Del Lago's varsity boys' basketball team scored an impressive 76-61 win at Ponderosa Friday night. Jaqyai Wiley had a season high 27 points, while Hayden Lescault had 21 points, Mike Young added 10 points and Marques White chipped in eight points. "Jaqyai Wiley is one of our most consistent guys,” Vista coach Jeff Bridges said. “He’s really playing his best game now. Ponderosa's star player Brad Waldow had a game-high 28 points. The Eagles held off a come-from-behind rally from the Bruins, who got as close as 61-53 with 3:03 left in the game. Brad Waldow is really a tough player to cover,” Bridges said. “I thought we played aggressively tonight." Vista's tough defense prevailed with Lescault scoring a break way slam dunk with just under a minute left in the fourth quarter, prompting the visiting Eagles fans to proclaim, "This is our house.” Vista started pulling away in the first quarter. Wiley scored a breakaway layup giving Vista an 11-7 lead with 3:45 left and then nailed a 3-pointer with three minutes remaining in the quarter upping the Eagles lead to 14-9. Spencer Hatten blocked a Bruin shot at 1:36 left in the first and the Vista press forced numerous Ponderosa turnovers giving the Eagles a 20-10 lead at the end of the first quarter. A nifty off-balance, fadeaway shot by Lescault gave the Eagles a 28-17 lead with 5:24 left in the second quarter and then the Vista standout scored on a driving basket, giving the Eagles a commanding 30-17 lead with 4:40 left in the half. Vista built a 38-26 halftime lead over the Ponderosa. The Eagles widened their lead to 44-28 in the second half with Wiley scoring on another breakaway layup with six minutes left in the third. Lescault made a steal and then scored on a driving layup while being fouled and converted a three-point play, upping the Vista lead to 49-34 with 2:55 left in the third. The Eagles led 53-41 ending the third quarter. Wiley added another 3-pointer starting the fourth, increasing the Vista lead to 56-41. Wiley then scored on another driving basket giving the Eagles a solid 61-47 lead with just 4:13 left in the game. That's when the Bruins hit a 3-pointer to draw within eight, 61-53 with 3:03 to play. Lescault scored on a driving basket with just 1:25 left, upping the Vista lead to 66-55. The Bruins committed a flagrant foul and Young made both free throws to give Vista a 68-57 lead with just over a minute left. Vista put the game on ice with a 74-59 lead with only 26 seconds left. In the junior varsity game, Vista easily won 49-28 over Ponderosa. Tyler Jones scored 12 points, while Ethan Pipion and Patrick Lowman both had seven points each. The road win kept the Eagles 7-0 perfect away record intact. Vista has an 8-1 league record and 22-2 overall. Two days earlier on Wednesday, the Eagles scored an easy home victory over Christian Brothers 63-33. Vista next hosts Galt on Wednesday.
