Murder suspects have first day in court
Cops say victim was stabbed
By Don Chaddock, The Telegraph
Tylar Witt, 14, is wanted in the murder of her mother, 47-year-old Joanne M. Witt. The teen was arrested in the Bay Area early Wednesday morning.

A 14-year-old murder suspect had a "detention" hearing Monday while her alleged accomplice, 19-year-old Steven "Boston" Colver pled not guilty in El Dorado County Superior Court that same afternoon on first-degree murder charges.

They were arrested by the San Bruno Police Department early Wednesday morning. El Dorado County Sheriff's homicide detectives travelled to San Bruno to interview the suspects Wednesday afternoon. Tylar Witt, 14, was returned to El Dorado County and booked into juvenile hall late Thursday. Colver was transferred to El Dorado County Jail Friday afternoon.

The body of 47-year-old Joanne M. Witt was found stabbed to death Monday in her El Dorado Hills home and evidence pointed to Witt's daughter and boyfriend, according to the sheriff's office. The agency issued arrest warrants for the pair on Tuesday morning and the manhunt was on.

They are the prime suspects in her death, according to El Dorado County Sheriff Capt. Craig Therkildsen.

The suspects were arrested at a strip mall Wednesday morning, according to law enforcement.

"We towed a car in San Francisco (linked to the couple)," Therkildsen said. Officers believed they were still in the area and that's where they focused their search.

"The real accolades go to the San Francisco Police Department (for their hard work)," Therkildsen said. At the press conference on Wednesday, he said all the Bay Area law enforcement agencies were a big help.

The suspects' car was located and impounded by the San Francisco Police Department on Tuesday, according to Sgt. Jim Byers of the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office.

Therkildsen said the teens were spotted in the Bay Area and altered their appearance, with Colver cutting his hair short and both coloring their hair jet black.

Prior to their capture, the teens were considered "armed and dangerous," according to Therkildsen.

Law enforcement officials say the victim was slain in a "very violent" manner and that a "stabbing instrument" was used. A murder weapon has not been recovered.

Colver is a 2008 graduate of Oak Ridge High School and was a shift leader at Rubio's, according to his Facebook page.

On that page, he listed "drinking (and) smoking" as his hobbies.

On his MySpace page, he last logged in on June 14. Tylar Witt also recently completed her first year at Oak Ridge High School.

The mother's body was found Monday by deputies doing a welfare check on the victim.

According to Therkildsen, the woman did not report to work on Friday and her coworkers became concerned. Some of her friends went to her home in the 200 block of Tattinger Court over the weekend and knocked on the door, but no one answered.

When the woman didn't report to work on Monday as well, the deputies went to her home and discovered the body. They cordoned off the home and had to wait for a search warrant before they could begin their investigation.

According to the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office, they had been called to the residence before responding to a report of an "inappropriate relationship."

Sources close to the family say Colver had been living with the Witts when the mother discovered her daughter and the older man were "dating."

According to Greg Sanders, 17, the mom wanted to push statutory rape charges against Colver, which probably sparked the deadly confrontation.

Upon hearing of the arrest of the teens, he said he knew they wouldn't be fugitives for long.

"I never thought they could get very far," he said. "I mean, they found all their stuff in a motel room."

Video news footage of where the teens were arrested showed police officers gathering a backpack, some dark shirts and a green duffle bag. The teens were camping between a trash receptacle enclosure and bushes at the end of a strip mall parking lot.

Pleas to Colver to turn himself in were posted on his Facebook page.

Brooke Mercer, who has appeared on local news broadcasts as a friend of Colver's, wrote, "Dude, Boston, you've got to quit running. We're all worried about you here. Please, Boston, you once told me that you would never be capable of such a thing. Prove me right. Prove yourself right. For me?"

Colver's MySpace page was deleted as of Thursday.
