High school football coaches and players from Vista del Lago and Oak Ridge will host the 17th Annual West Coast Youth Football Camp, Wednesday, June 13 to Friday, June 15 at Oak Ridge High School. Beginners and seasoned veterans, ages 6-14 years old, can learn offensive and defensive individual technique, as well as football fundamentals. ?We go in stages, starting from bags and ultimately going with one-on-one matchups. It?s a really good progression for the kids,? said Oak Ridge football coach Mark Watson. In 2010, the camp?s first full-contact year, about 130 youth football players participated. Last year, the camp grew to about 170 and coaches said they expect it to be bigger and better. ?We get a great mixture of kids; kids who are there fore the first time with contact and seasoned guys who want to get some work in before their season starts,? Watson said. ?We use varsity football players from both high schools, so we get a lot of Jr. Eagles players and Jr. Trojans players, but at the same time kids from all over the area come out.? The camp?s third year of full-contact practice and drills is filling up quickly. Watson and co-founder Chris Jones, Vista del Lago football coach, have received more than 100 registrants with three weeks left until the camp. ?In 17 years, we?ve developed a real reputation and relationship with the communities in our area. It?s our staple event and it?s just what kids want in a full-contact camp,? Watson said.
