The previous Folsom Heritage column published in The Folsom Telegraph used a headline containing the term “history buff.” I think the term “buff” should be outlawed. It is insulting and it shreds value and credibility from those defined by it. The term has distinct negative connotations that marginalize those described, inferring a lack of general understanding and a narrow almost abnormal obsession with one subject area — in this case history. I would never describe myself as a “history buff” though I am a strong advocate for the development, understanding and utilization of our heritage, and recognize the immense contribution the heritage industry can make to an economy. Would you call Mr. Elliott or Mr. Bernau a “development buff?” Philip S. Rose, Folsom
