A win tonight would give Eagles a big boost

If Vista del Lago ever needed a win, tonight’s the night when they host Cosumnes Oaks at 7:30 p.m.

Vista is coming off a week in which they lost two bitterly disappointing games and fell to 2-4 in the Sierra Valley Conference and 9-12 overall.

The Eagles opened last week with a 54-53 loss to River City on Jan. 21, a game they led by nine points with five minutes remaining, before they let it all slip away.

“We didn’t score the rest of the game and they hit a three with 12 seconds to go,” Vista coach Matt von Tillow said. “We turned the ball over a lot and missed free throws.”

The loss was followed two days later by a 77-69 defeat at the hands of El Dorado, a team Vista beat earlier this season, 62-54.

“We just didn’t play any defense,” von Tillow said. “They got a ton of layups in the paint and made them.”

The basketball power rankings released this morning has the Eagles sitting in 22nd-place, which means they are in danger of missing the playoffs. They need wins and getting one tonight at home against Sierra Valley Conference leading Cosumnes Oaks (7-0, 16-6) would be a step in the right direction. Vista lost to the Wolfpack badly Jan. 9, 75-44, but can certainly do better than that.

“They’re not 30 points better than us,” von Tillow said. “They beat us by 30 last year at their place, but we beat them at our place so it can be done. It’s a matter of executing and finishing off plays. We’ve had three or four practices since losing to El Dorado to work on that. It’s all on us and it’s going to take maximum effort to beat them. A lot has to go our way, but I’m not ruling it out.”

On Thursday the Eagles play host to Galt (0-7, 1-16).

"They're all big from here on out," von Tillow said.
