To better accommodate the expected flood of residents, El Dorado Irrigation District has secured a larger meeting place for the Feb. 4 public hearing on the district’s proposed rate increases. The hearing will now be held at 6 p.m. at the El Dorado Adventist School Gymnasium, 1900 Broadway in Placerville. “Based on the number of customers who attended our first two workshops, we decided a larger meeting space was needed,” said Jim Abercrombie, the district’s general manager. Hundreds of El Dorado Hills residents have turned out for public meetings to voice their concerns over the El Dorado Irrigation District’s proposed rate hike. EID has proposed a rate increase of 35 percent in 2010, followed by increases of 15 percent in 2011 and 5 percent each year from 2012 through 2014 for a cumulative increase of 85 percent. Abercrombie said the “board and staff have been listening to customer concerns and suggestions,” and are now working on a plan B. “We’ll present the outline of that plan at the (coming) workshops,” he said. EID officials said that the agency sorely overestimated revenue and without the rate hike will be unable to meet its financial responsibilities. Last year the district projected $14 million in new hook up revenue, but received only $1 million, according to officials with EID. Additionally the agency projected $62.5 million in overall revenue with a revised projected of $55.49 million. A 51 percent majority is required to stop the proposed increases. However, since the protest responses are sent to EID’s office, some are concerned about accountability. “If they get 51 percent, Prop. 218 says that they can’t pass it,” said Dee April at a prior public meeting. “How do we really know how many they get?” The gap to be filled in EID’s budget is reportedly $13 million. * * * KNOW AND GO What: Public hearing When: 6 p.m., Feb. 4 Where: El Dorado Adventist School Gymnasium, 1900 Broadway in Placerville WORKSHOPS: • 6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 27, Oak Ridge High School Cafeteria, 1120 Harvard Way, El Dorado Hills • 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 28, Cameron Park Community Services District, 2502 Country Club Drive, Cameron Park * * * Penne Usher can be reached at For more information and for maps to the meeting sites, the district encourages customers to visit or call (530) 622-4513 or (916) 965-0930.
