The newest feature at our regional all-sports Web site, Placer Sports, launched this morning, when we released three candidates for our first Athlete of the Week of the fall high school sports season. Voting will run from Monday through Sunday each week, with three athletes chosen from the high schools throughout the Gold Country Media footprint – covering Placer County as well as the communities of Folsom and El Dorado Hills. Log on each week to check out the new nominees and cast your vote. Our initial poll pits three of the regions top ball carriers against each other. You can’t go wrong with any part of this trio, but let us know which runner you prefer. Placer senior Asher Gotzmer is a 6-0, 175-pound back who rushed for 128 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Hillmen past Casa Roble 31-30 in week three. He was also a key defensively, helping stop the Rams' two-point conversion attempt late in the fourth quarter. Overall, Gotzmer has run for 638 and 10 touchdowns in four games. James Nunley is in his fourth year as a varsity starter for Woodcreek. The 5-11, 178-pound tailback has rushed for 835 yards and eight touchdowns in Woodcreek’s first four games this season. The senior topped 300 yards in two consecutive games in weeks two and three. The third option is Del Oro senior Bryce Pratt. The senior running back has been unstoppable in the Golden Eagles’ first four games this season. At 6-foot, 195 pounds, Pratt has rushed for 813 yards and 14 touchdowns to help the Golden Eagles get off to a 4-0 start. Which do you prefer? Log on to PlacerSports.com and vote.
