Vista del Lago took a step closer to wrapping up the Sierra Valley Conference wrestling title following a 61-18 win over River City Tuesday night.
As the final score indicates, the Eagles dominated the match, winning six matches by fall, two by technical fall and two others by forfeit.
Senior Jacob Sahagun, wrestling up two weight classes and giving up twenty pounds to his opponent in the 182-pound weight class, highlighted the match with a pin in the second period against John Gray.
“Jacob stayed in great position and waited for his opponent’s mistakes and got the fall,” Vista coach Frank Richmond said.
Sahagun’s win came after a forfeit win by Troy Grossi at 152 pounds and a pair of technical falls by Christian Peralta (160) and Ben Johnson (170). Peralta defeated Pedro Castro, 16-1, while Johnson earned a 15-0 win over Davies Pannyasee.
Ian Berklacich followed Sahagun’s win with Vista’s only victory by decision, as he defeated Kevin Burkes, 9-5, at 195 pounds. Clayton Wagner (220) and Alex King (Hwt.) followed with pins; Wagner’s coming in the second period and King’s in the third, as the Eagles worked up a 37-0 lead halfway through the match.
After dropping three matches by fall, the Eagles rebounded to win the final three matches, including a forfeit win by Ney Vencer at 132. Jesse Zhang (126) pinned Andrew Penn in the first period, while Michael Gary (138) and Evan Shelley (145) scored second-period pins over Aaron Tyson and Jerry Delgado, respectively.
Vista is now 4-0 in the Sierra Valley Conference and plays host to Galt in its final home match Tuesday, a night when the team will honor its seniors.
