Vista tennis team splits with River City, Liberty Ranch

After a 6-3 loss to River City March 19, Vista del Lago’s tennis team defeated Liberty Ranch Thursday, 7-2.

The boys led the way, as Gus Hendrick and Gage Huber dominated their opponents at No. 1 and 2 singles, respectively, Hendrick winning 6-1, 6-0 and Huber taking a 6-0, 6-0 win.

In doubles action, Priyank Varshney and Akshay Rathish shutout their opponents 6-0, 6-0, while Saiyeesh Rathish and Julian Rodkiewicz won by default and then played River City’s top singles players and beat them 8-1.

For the girls, Anjelica Frank played a competitive match with Kelly Buckband and won 6-1, 4-6, 7-5. In doubles play, Arielle Frank and Danica Greenall earned a 6-2, 6-0 win.

Div Shivesh and Renee Beckwith earned a 6-1, 6-1 victory in mixed doubles.

Despite suffering a 6-3 loss to River City two days earlier, it was an exciting match for the Eagles. Singles players Sandeep Gurram (6-0, 6-0) and Gus Hendricks (6-0, 6-1) won easily, while the doubles team of Huber and Varshney worked hard for a 6-4, 6-7 (10-5) win.

Jingwen Low dropped a heartbreaking marathon match at No. 1 singles, 4-6, 7-5, 6-6 (5-7).

“It was an outstanding match, even though we weren’t on the winning side,” Vista coach Rich Klingensmith said. “Jingwen played with her heart, mind and body. It was a well-played, physically and mentally challenging match.”

At No. 2 singles, Anjelica Frank also battled hard before losing 5-7, 6-4, 4-6. At No. 2 doubles, Akshay and Saiyeesh were involved in yet another tough match, losing 6-1, 3-6 (8-10).

Arielle Frank and Greenall fought hard in a 7-5, 6-4 loss, while Amy Nail and Courtney Gallion dropped a 6-1, 6-4 decision. In mixed doubles, Rodkiewicz and Hannah Avdalovic fell 7-6, 2-6, 7-10.
