Vista rolling along in Sierra Valley ConferenceBy: Matt Long, Sports Editor
Vista del Lago has two league games this week, but the one non-league game figures to be much more significant.
The Eagles (8-0 in league, 17-9 overall) travel to Jesuit today to play the Marauders (13-8), who are far and away a better team than either of Vista’s league opponents they face this week, Union Mine (Tuesday) and West Campus (Thursday).
Coach Wayne Campbell is looking forward to the match.
“I’m looking for our guys to step up against Jesuit,” Campbell said. “Jesuit is a solid team. They were at the Bellarmine Tournament with us and they looked sharp. If we can win that match, it shows that we’re in the right place heading into the playoffs. Because our league is week, it’s good to play some tough teams so we stay sharp for the playoffs. I’m interested to see how we step up.”
The Eagles are coming off two wins last week, defeating El Dorado in three games April 16 (25-15, 25-18, 25-17) and then Golden Sierra (25-12, 25-23, 25-18). It was a pair of solid wins for the Eagles, as the bench players saw plenty of court time.
“We played pretty well,” Campbell said. “We had an opportunity to play the bench and they pulled out a close win by themselves in the second game against Golden Sierra.”
Vista has three league matches remaining against West (Thursday), Capital Christian (Tuesday) and Cosumnes Oaks (May 2).
“I would like to see us come out focused for every point and not just going through the motions,” Campbell said. “The bench players are my team next year and they need this experience and to learn to play and win games.”
