The opening match in the Sierra Valley Conference couldn’t have gone much better for Vista del Lago’s wrestling team. The Eagles won every match they competed in, dropping six points only by forfeit, in Wednesday’s 71-6 victory over Liberty Ranch. Vista wrestlers scored seven pins and one technical fall and go along with two forfeits and two decisions in the easy win. Austin Burke (120), Robert Stapp (126), Jacob Sahagun (160), CJ Moore (170) and Clayton Wagner (220) all had first-period pins, including Wagner’s which came in just 33 seconds. Moore also pinned his opponent in less than a minute, his coming in 54 seconds. Troy Grossi (145) and Ben Johnson (152) both had second-period pins, while Brandon Johnson (195) scored a 17-0 technical fall victory. Austin Button, wrestling at 138, earned an 8-6 decision, while Brad Rittenhouse (182) won 7-4. Austin Rompel (106) and Daniel Rodriguez (132) earned forfeits. “It went pretty close to perfect,” Vista coach Frank Richmond said. “We will need to use this momentum in our next dual against defending league champs Union Mine. This dual will likely determine this year’s league champ.” Vista plays host to Union Mine today with the varsity match following the junior varsity bouts, which begin at 6 p.m.
