No matter the outcome of tonight's first-round playoff game against Modesto Christian, it’s been a good season for the Vista del Lago girls’ basketball team.

After not making the playoffs a year ago, the Eagles qualified this season with a 15-12 record and earned the 11th-seed in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division III playoffs. Modesto Christian, the sixth seed with a 19-8 record, is the favorite to win tonight, but the game isn’t won on paper.

“Win or lose we’ve had a successful season,” Vista coach Marty Benjamin said Saturday. “To win we’re going to have to play as good as we’ve played all season. If we are able to put together a full game, I think we’ll have a fighting chance. We’re excited for the opportunity to play Modesto Christian. They are a storied program whose goals are much higher than ours. Our goal was to get to the playoffs, having not made it last year. Modesto Christian’s goals every year are to not only make the playoffs, but do some damage.”

Benjamin said Modesto Christian is a fundamentally-sound, athletic team and can knock down the three-point shot. His team entered the game coming off a couple solid days of practice.

“We’ve had a lot of moments this season when we’ve played super basketball, but we’ve not always put it together for a whole game,” Benjamin said. “That’s going to be the question Tuesday, can we put it together?”
