For the second straight season, Vista del Lago’s varsity girls’ cross country team placed 13th in the Division III state cross country championship. At Woodward Park in Fresno on Saturday, sophomore Madeleine Ankhelyi led the way by placing ninth in 18 minutes, seven seconds, 14 seconds faster than her time last year when she placed tenth. "It went really well," Ankhelyi said. "It was a fast race and I went out fast and tried to stick with the leaders. I got passed by a few people at the end, but I still felt strong. I was in 11th or 12th most of the race and ended up ninth." Sophomore Jennifer Morgan also had a good performance as Vista’s No. 2 runner, as she placed 23rd in 18:56. Senior Marissa Mendez placed 74th in 20:00, followed by senior Jennifer Arbaugh, who placed 85th in 20:12 and sophomore Elizabeth Anderson, who ran 121st in 20:59. Sophomore Hannah Osuna and freshman Dali Alarian both finished in 21:14 in 128th and 129th place, respectively. “I had said that a top-15 finish would be good for us and we finished right where we did last year in 13th,” Vista coach Mike Livingston said. “I’m happy with how the girls ran and proud of the group. Madeleine ran well and had a personal best and Jennifer really wanted to break 19 and she did. Marissa has been sick so for her to run third was good. Jen had a personal-record on the course and Elizabeth pulled through for us. “It’s an incredibly intense meet and you really have to perform well on that day and I thought the girls did.”
