Vista del Lago’s varsity girls’ basketball team is off and running with a pair of wins this week. The Eagles opened the season on Monday with a 60-36 win over Whitney. Vista got off to a high-flying start, leading 11-0, only to see Whitney go on a 14-4 run to cut the lead to one. From that point, however, the Eagles pulled away. Monica Miles scored 12 points and added five rebounds and Danielle Bryant scored nine points and pulled down nine rebounds to lead the way. Coach Jim Stephens was pleased with his team’s defensive effort, as they limited Whitney to 36 points. On Tuesday the Eagles took a big step very early in the season, coming from behind to defeat Laguna Creek, 63-60. After winning many games by a large margin last season at the junior varsity level, the Eagles haven’t been in many close games, especially close games that they’ve won. “It was nice to come from behind and win a close game,” Stephens said. The fact that Vista made only 15-of-37 free throws and still won is surprising, but the Eagles found a way to pull it out after trailing by five early in the fourth quarter. Stephens scored 11 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, while Robin Clawson scored a team-high 20 points to lead the way. Bryant added nine rebounds, Miles chipped in six assists, while Jessica Pena scored nine points and blocked four shots.
