Vista del Lago’s varsity girls’ cross country team dominated the field at the Division III Sac-Joaquin Section cross country championships on Friday at Willow Hills. The Eagles won their second straight section title with 29 points, well in front of runner-up Del Oro, who finished with 73 points. The Eagles also set a course record at Willow Hills, as the team’s five runners finished in a combined time of 1 hour, 35 minutes, 27 seconds. Junior Madeleine Ankhelyi, sophomore Clare Carroll and freshman Sierra Jaeger placed second, third and fourth in 18 minutes, 1 second, 18:18 and 18:51, respectively. Ankhelyi finished second to Oakmont’s Karlie Garcia by 20 seconds. “I’m really happy with how I ran,” Ankhelyi said. “My goal was to run around 18 and I ran 18:01. It was my personal-best time on that course by about a minute. I was really tired at the end, but I felt good. I was also happy that I was able to stay within 20 seconds of Karlie.” Vista coach Alex Mansoor was impressed by Ankhelyi’s performance. “I thought Madeleine ran an excellent race,” Mansoor said. “She ran almost a minute faster than last year, ran the third-fastest time ever on the course and ran 25 seconds faster than (Oak Ridge alum) Alex Kosinski, who is her idol. There was a lot of good there for her.” Mansoor was also happy with Clare Carroll’s performance, as she’s been hurt nearly all season and is finally healthy. “Clare’s coming around from a calf injury and for her first really hard race, I was pleased with how she did. She was only 20 seconds off her time from last year and I think in another couple weeks she ought to be right there.” Sophomore Alegra Mendez ran ninth in 20:02, while Jennifer Morgan, a junior, placed 11th in 20:15. Senior Chelsea Shill ran 21st in 20:54. Jaeger’s brother, Zach, a junior, also qualified for the state meet, placing eighth in the Division III boys’ race, finishing the course in 16:43, 34 seconds behind the winner, Del Oro’s Trevor Stephens. Jaeger is the first Vista male runner to qualify for the state meet. Elizabeth Anderson ran in the junior varsity girls’ race, placing 15th in 24:04. Competing for the freshman boys, Kyle Chun placed second in 11:47. Michaela Reynolds and Weirui Xiao ran fifth and sixth in the freshman-sophomore girls’ race, finishing in 14:14 and 14:15, respectively. Megan Howell placed 11th in 14:36. For the sophomore boys, Aaron Schiek ran 27th in 12:59, while Christian Guevara placed 34th in 13:10. The state meet will be held at Woodward Park in Fresno on Nov. 26. The Eagles are ranked third in the state in Division III, while Ankhelyi is ranked fourth in the state.
