It’s been a great spring sports season for Vista del Lago, as the soccer, volleyball, swim and tennis teams claimed Sierra Valley Conference titles and it appears the baseball and softball teams will make the playoffs as well. The school’s golf team is the latest group to win a league championship, as they finished the year with a 10-2 record. The Eagles split the season series with Union Mine and El Dorado, who ended up finishing second and third, respectively, in the league. The Eagles won both league tournaments as well. “We tended to play fairly well under pressure and I feel we’re deeper than other teams,” Vista coach Mike Messersmith said. “Our number five and six golfers were almost always much stronger than any team we faced. We won a few matches with strong showings from our lowest group and that was a big boost.” Junior Dalton Theis and senior Josh Cordova led the Eagles. Messersmith said both should be all-league players and that Theis could be the league’s Most Valuable Player. “Sophomore Arick Koeth and senior Paul Lakkis were consistent top scorers and both of them have a shot at all-league as well,” Messersmith said. The Eagles will compete in the Division IV section tournament at Brookside in Stockton on Monday. “I feel we have a decent chance of moving on from there,” Messersmith said. Other players on the team include Chris Bringgold, Brian Cameron, Ryan Dunn, Jamison Leighton, Ryan McNeese, Drew McPherson, Kyle O’Brien and Jake Padilla.
