Vista del Lago advanced to the quarterfinals of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division III tennis championships with a 9-0 win over Delhi on Tuesday. The Eagles will face West Campus on Monday for the chance to advance to the semifinals. Vista defeated West Campus 7-2 a few weeks ago and hopes to do it again, this time with much more on the line. Four matches Tuesday went to three sets and the Eagles came out on top in all of them. No. 1 Sandeep Gurram won 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, while Kyle Johnson at No. 2 also had to go to a third set before earning a 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 victory. At No. 1 doubles, Gus Hendrick and Julian Rodkiewicz also dropped the middle set in a 6-0, 2-6, 6-4 win. At mixed doubles Akshay Rathis and Arielle Frank picked up a 6-7, 6-1, 7-5 win. The girls? single players, Kriti Bhatia and Jingwen Low won in straight sets, Bhatia winning 6-4, 6-2 and Low coming away with a 6-1, 6-0 victory. Katie Sarrels and Danica Greenall battled hard at No. 2 doubles, earning a 6-4, 7-6 win, while teammates Dina Alarian and Anjelica Frank won easily, 6-0, 6-0. Gage Huber and Preston Fagalde earned a 6-0, 6-3 win. ?I?m happy how we played today and also happy we had many close matches,? Vista coach Chris Evers said. ?Those close matches will help the players succeed in further playoff matches. I?m very proud with how everyone competed today. We have a nice blend of players. What?s most exciting is seven of the 14 players that played are either freshmen or first-year players on the team. They are getting a wealth of knowledge playing at the varsity level.?
