Vernon qualifies for state meet in triple jump

Folsom High senior Doug Vernon has qualified for the state track and field championships in the triple jump. Vernon set a personal-best mark of 46 feet, 6 ½ inches at Thursday?s Sac-Joaquin Section Masters Championships at Elk Grove High. Vernon placed fourth overall and will compete in the state meet because he met the automatic qualifying distance of 46-6. Vista del Lago didn?t qualify anyone to the state meet on Thursday, but set three school records. Matt Raymond placed 12th in the 400 meters, finishing in 50.25 seconds for the first school record. Caprina Pipion followed shortly after with a 12th-place finish in the 400 meters in a school-record time of 59.34. Ethan Pipion also set a school record in the 300 hurdles with a time of 39.79 and qualified for tonight?s final. Meaghan Heffelfinger placed 10th in the discus with a throw of 112-1. Vista?s boys? 4x400-meter relay team of Harry Kozlowski, Nathan Lemay, Raymond and Ethan Pipion placed 14th with a time of 3:27.83, while the girls? squad of Taylor Knickerbocker, Maci Shill, Kyra Tung and Caprina Pipion ran 19th in 4:11.48. The girls? 4x100-meter relay team of Kelsey Decker, Jessica Sampson, Tung and Caprina Pipion were disqualified with a zone violation. Joining Ethan Pipion in the finals tonight will be Madeleine Ankhelyi and Clare Carroll in the 3,200; Sierra Jaeger in the 1,600, Heffelfinger in the shot put and Marisa Leung in the pole vault.
