Better late than never. That’s the motto that Doug Vernon was jumping to on Friday at the Woody Wilson Invitational at UC Davis. Folsom’s top triple jumper scratched on his first two attempts, but came through on his final jump of 44 feet, 11 inches to advance. In the finals, he was true to form with a leap of 45’ 7 ¾” on his final attempt to take third. In only his third career run in the mile, Derek Woodard placed eighth in 4 minutes, 49 seconds. Woodward was consistent from the start, running the first lap in 67 seconds, followed by laps of 66, 68 and 66 seconds, respectively. Jessica Gannon cleared the bar at the high jump at 5’ ¼”, the same height as the winner, but ended up seventh because she had more misses than six others. Trevor Jones finished 11th in the discus at 137 feet and 12th in the shot put at 45 feet. Tyler Trosin finished ninth in the long jump with a leap of 20’10 ½”. Sophomores David Hanson (2:15), Jon Barrows (2:12), Jake Goodwin (2:17) and Sam Scheuer (2:18) combined to run the 4x800-meter relay in 9:03, the second-best time by a Folsom High team, and placed 15th.
